Captains Day Competition at Aphrodite Hills Golf

The final quarter of 2014 saw a number of exciting
Golf Tournaments at Aphrodite Hills Golf Club, among them ‘CAPTAINS DAY’!

On Wednesday 8th October 2014, we saw ‘Captains Day’ commence with 85 players eager to pit their wits against the course; Men from the White Tees and Ladies from the Blue Tees, an Individual Stableford event.

The day started very promisingly with golfers enjoying the fantastic weather and good scoring conditions on the highly conditioned championship layout. The course was in superb shape, thanks to the hard work of our Green Keepers!

The event was organised by the Club’s Captain, John O’Neill and Lady Captain, Ellen Fehrn Christensen with the assistance of the Golf Team. Both Captains did a great job in creating a fun but competitive atmosphere throughout the day.

Several competitions were arranged on and off the GolfCourse for this prestigious event; firstly, the Putting Competition, which was won by Grahame Dye. The on-course competitions saw Marilei Baxter win the Ladies Longest Drive and Sergey Smirnov won the Men’s Longest Drive. Nearest the Pin was ‘A HOLE IN ONE’ by Sir David O’ Dowd on Hole No. 5 and so our huge congratulations go to him! Men’s Winner was Timothy Wilson and Ladies Winner was Marilei Baxter. We would like to thank the Pro’s at this time for the ‘Beat the Pro’ at Hole 17, which contributed towards the charity funds.

The Captains Gala Dinner followed in the evening in Morpheus Ballroom, hosting over 120 Members and their guests who all enjoyed the excellent food provided by our F&B Department. What a memorable day with which to close the year of captaincy for both John and Ellen.

The event also helped to raise €1322 for the Captains Charity Cancer Patients Support Group in Paphos. The Captains would like to sincerely thank all of you for your generous support with donations.

Finally, the Golf Team would like to thank all Members for their continued support and to all participants who made the day such a great success!

We wish you all well in all you do!

Pre-Christmas Health Focus from the Retreat Spa Team

Christmas is upon us and with all the festive goodies surrounding us, it is hard not to give into temptation and over indulge! Taking a little bit of something ‘naughty but nice’ in moderation may be OK - however - be careful not to fall into the trap of relying on your New Year’s weight loss resolution, to assuage your guilt trip and have ‘just one more’. It all adds up and may lead to toxic overload.

Toxins
Toxins come in different guises and are harmful substances which pollute and irritate our bodies, putting a strain on the efficiency of our organs. Although our bodies are designed to eliminate these unwanted substances, the efficiency is dependent on age and health. When the system becomes overburdened and unable to cope, toxins can build up. Everyday activities such as walking in the park or eating a piece of fruit can actually subject us to toxins. It has been estimated that on average, we eat or drink 3.75 litres of pesticides found on fresh fruit, ingest 5kg of chemical food additives and breathe in 2g of solid pollution every year!

How to Reduce the Consumption of Toxins
  • Buy organic foods where possible.
  • Avoid drinking tap water which can contain high levels of heavy metals, nitrates and nitrites from fertilizers - opt for filtered or mineral water.
  • Cut out smoking or being in a smoky environment.
  • Reduce your intake of processed or packaged foods.
  • Cut back on the amount of sweet, fatty and salty foods.
  • Always wash and peel non-organic fruit and vegetables.
  • Avoid eating dairy products and meat too often.
  • Keep your intake of black tea, coffee and fizzy drinks to a minimum.
  • Read labels carefully to avoid artificial additives and genetically modified ingredients.
  • Reduce alcohol consumption
Detox
Are you feeling constantly tired, finding it difficult to sleep, suffer from headaches or indigestion? Do not despair… there is no need to go and live in a sterile bubble. A detox can help you to give your body a spring clean, boosting your energy levels. Even the healthiest among us can do with having a detox a least twice a year - and especially after periods of overindulgence such as Christmas.

Are You Suffering From Toxic Overload?
The more questions you answer yes, the more likely you will benefit from a detox.
A detox will cleanse and rejuvenate the body, improve the metabolism and circulation and strengthen the immune system. It can improve the condition of your skin, hair and nails and slow down the ageing process. As well as the physical benefits, a detox can improve your ability to cope with stress, de-clutter your mind and lift your mood, leaving you feeling relaxed and energised.

The Weekend Detox
Choose a weekend when you are not too busy and allow yourself plenty of time to rest and pamper yourself with a detoxifying spa treatment to assist in the elimination of toxins, stimulate the circulation and metabolism. Prepare your body two days before by reducing your intake of toxins as indicated above.

Day One
Morning: When you wake up, drink a cup of hot water, flavoured with the juice of half a lemon. This will give a kick start to the liver. Do some simple stretches to stimulate the lymphatic system and give yourself a dry skin brush, before showering. Prepare a fruit juice from any combination of the Fruit Super Foods, diluting with some water.

Late Morning: Have a detoxifying spa treatment such as the Winter Detox Wrap, Lift & Firm Hip & Thigh Treatment, Personalised Body Wrap or the super indulgent 2-hour Personalised Holistic Ritual. Drink some herbal tea and eat some fruit such as apple, pear or grapes.

Lunch: Make a vegetable juice from any of the Vegetable Super Foods and a large salad with tomatoes, cucumber, fennel, carrot and beetroot with a dressing of olive oil, garlic and lemon juice.

Afternoon: Relax after lunch and try some gentle exercise such as Pilates or Yoga. Drink plenty of water.

Late Afternoon: Choose a vegetable juice from any of the Vegetable Super Foods.

Evening: Between 6pm and 8pm, have an evening meal of lightly steamed vegetables, sprinkled with fresh herbs and lemon juice accompanied by organic brown rice. Alternatively make a vegetable stir fry or a large salad. Have a detoxifying bath with ESPA Detoxifying Seaweed Bath or ESPA Detoxifying Bath Salts and retire to bed early, drinking plenty of water before going to sleep.

Skin Brushing
Use a natural bristle brush, such as the ESPA Skin Brush; helps to eliminate toxins and improve the appearance of cellulite because it encourages lymphatic circulation. Starting from the feet, brush upwards towards the heart, over the buttocks. Brush up the arms and in circular, clockwise motions over your stomach to stimulate the colon.

Day Two
Take it easy as you may feel tired. Repeat the same routine as day one, but choosing different fruit and vegetable juices. In the morning, brush your skin and take a cool shower. In the afternoon, have a sauna followed by an Aromatherapy Massage with the ESPA Detoxifying Body Oil containing lymphatic stimulants of Juniper Berry and Cypress.

HELD AT THE GOLF CLUBHOUSE

After the excitement of the Miracle of Medina, GolfClub staff knew that the spectacle of the Ryder Cup, Golf's greatest team event, should be shared with clients and Club Members with a special 4-day promotion.

Golf Director, Andrew Darker, expressed his desire to stage an event for spectating the spectacular at our splendid location!

His vision was met by the decision to mount a huge TV wall on the Golf Club terrace area and by ensuring that all televisions on the first floor of the Golf Club were showing the Ryder Cup. Food and Beverage perfectly complemented this event, with superb food stations of the highest quality of taste and service.

The final day saw the International Sunday Buffet included as part of the Ryder Cup occasion; a truly fitting end to this wonderful Golf spectacular that had unfurled daily before a large captivated audience!

Retreat Spa Fitness Focus - November

How to Eliminate Back Fat
Great advice from our Retreat Spa Fitness Team !

Back bulge around the bra area is not fun to deal with, but you can feel more confident in your own skin with just a little extra effort. Sure, targeting specific body parts to burn fat does not always work, but these healthy tips can help you get the results you want!

Turn Up Your Cardio
If you are serious about getting rid of fat, you have got to start getting serious about cardio. You should perform 45- to 60-minute sessions 4 or 5 times a week. For even more intense cardio, go for interval training, which alternates between periods of pushing your body and recovery, since it offers an ‘after-burn effect’. This means that after exercising, your body can burn more calories throughout the day even at rest or sleep, than it would after completing a steady-paced workout.
Focus on Toning
Add moves that sculpt your back, shoulders and oblique’s to reveal the strong muscles that lie beneath. Posture-improving exercises can also do wonders! Practicing Yoga and Pilates can help you take off back fat too, focusing on core strength.

Try the following exercises:
Superman Exercise:
·     Lie on your belly, engage your abs and extend your arms straight out in front of you.
·     Lift your legs, arms and chest off the floor. Hold for a count of 5 and then slowly release your body back to the floor, keeping your abdominals engaged.
·     Repeat 8-12 times.
 Warrior 3:
·    Stand with your feet together. Inhale as you extend your arms out wide in a ‘T’ position or straight overhead for a more advanced variation.
·     Exhale as you bend forward at your hips, lifting your right leg straight behind you coming into Warrior 3. Draw your navel toward your spine and hold for 5 breaths. Then come to stand, lower your right leg and repeat with the left leg lifted for another 5 breaths.
·     Continue this movement another 2 times on each side.
Pilates Swimming on the Mat:
·     Begin on your stomach with your arms extended in front of you.
·     Keeping your neck neutral and in line with your spine, lift your feet, arms and chest from the floor.
·   Begin to ‘swim’ by lifting your opposite arm and leg a little higher, then alternate sides, making a fluttering motion.
·     Continue this movement for one minute, paying attention to your breathing, and keeping your core very tight throughout.
Rowing:
·     Rowing can be an ideal exercise to strengthen back muscles, whilst also benefiting from cardio.

Bent Over Row:
·     Hold a dumbbell in each hand and stand with your feet hips-width distance apart. Keep a slight bend in your knees. Fold your torso forward so your back is almost parallel with the floor and your arms are extended out, in line with your shoulders. Draw your abs in to protect your lower back.
·     As you exhale, bring your elbows toward your shoulders and close to your side. To get the upper back working, think of sliding your shoulder blades together. As you inhale, slowly lower the dumbbells back to the starting position. This counts as one rep.
·     With control, perform 8-12 reps 3-4 times.

Side Plank Knee Tuck:
·     Start by propping your body up on one arm, while raising the other arm straight up in the air. By raising the opposite arm you are stretching out and isolating the obliques.
·     Stagger your feet so that the top foot is in front of your bottom foot. While keeping your body perfectly straight, bring your bottom foot as far to your chest as possible. Hold your knee at your chest for one second and repeat the motion.
·     Do 12-15 reps per side. Make sure you keep your body straight!!! As this starts to get too easy try to hold your knee into your chest for longer than one second.
Eat Smarter
Choosing healthier foods and cooking up cleaner recipes are essential in your battle against back bulge. Check for fat-burning recipes for breakfast, lunch, dinner - and even snacks that can support your goals.
Shop Your Shape
OK, this will not really get rid of fat, but it will certainly help you feel more comfortable in your skin. If you're concerned about the bulge around your bra, it simply might be time to go up a size in your bra or jeans. Flattering clothes will help you feel more confident so that you feel less stressed. Instead of getting caught up in the size you are wearing, always focus on how you feel in the clothes you are in.
