Summer Sun Tips !

Preparing for the Beach

After a winter of wearing jumpers, long sleeves and jackets, summer is here and you’re ready to show off some skin! However, before you can do this you need to make sure your skin is ready for the harsh UV rays of the sun. Here’s what you’ll need to consider:

Take care of dry skin
Summer demands smooth radiant skin, but cold winter temperatures may have left your skin lacking. If you have normal skin, use a body scrub to exfoliate 3 times-a-week. If your skin is sensitive, try using a less abrasive exfoliant. However make sure, not to over-exfoliate; this could lead to uneven shedding and strip your skin of natural oils, leading to even drier results. For a gentle scrub try the ESPA ‘Invigorating Body Reviver’ with Lemongrass, Lime & Thyme - this scrub will not only smooth your skin but revive your senses.

Get rid of stubble
Have you ever found a strip of hair you missed while shaving in the shower? Getting rid of it is essential to smooth skin, but shaving outside of the shower isn’t ideal, as it could result in razor burn. To address this problem, apply natural oil to the strip of hair before using the razor. This will prevent razor burn and soften the hair you’re shaving.

Switch your soap
Did you know that some types of soap actually suck the moisture out of your skin? This isn’t something you want to worry about when you’re heading to the beach, so change your soap now! Try an all-natural soap free shower gel such as the ESPA ‘Nourishing Shower Cream’ with Rose, Patchouli and Shea Butter for deeply cleansed but soft and smooth skin.

Impurities in your body can make your skin look tired and worn. Luckily, this problem is easily taken care of by drinking more water. Drinking an extra glass or two during the summer can flush out impurities, moisturize your skin and boost your energy.

Slather on the sunscreen
And not just any sunscreen! You simply can’t trust your skin to the average off-the-shelf sunscreen. You need something that will block UVA and UVB rays so you can stay at the beach for as long as you want. Make sure you reapply after swimming even if it says it is waterproof.

Talk to our Experts
Before you head for the beach, talk to our experts at The Retreat Spa, they can arrange a consultation for you and advise you of the best regime for your skin.  As well as great advice on looking after your skin, they can also arrange massage, facial treatments and even advise you on improving your fitness when you are here.

Traditional Easter Bread Recipe - Tsoureki

From the InterContinental Aphrodite Hills Resort Hotel pastry team, we bring you their secret recipe for the traditional Easter Bread "Tsoureki" that they have been preparing this week in our kitchens

125 grs Bread Flour
55 ml milk
10 grs yeast

625 grs bread flour
175 grs Icing Sugar
3 Eggs
125 grs butter in room temperature
60 ml warm milk
9 gr orange zest
7 grs salt
1 Tbsp baking powder
1 Tbsp soda
1 tbsp Mechlepi
1 tbsp Masticha
½ tbsp cardamom

1.    Mix the first 3 ingredients together to form a light dough and leave to rest for 2 hours in a warm place until it has doubled in size
2.    Mix all the rest of the ingredients together until a dough is formed. Add the first dough to the second dough and kneed till all mixed well
3.    Leave to rise for 1 hour and then kneed again and shape into the required shape and bake in the oven for approx. 35 minutes on 180 Degrees

Tsoureki is a type of braided bread which is traditionally served in Greece to celebrate Easter. Several neighboring nations also make a traditional Easter bread which is physically identical to tsoureki, such as choreg in Armenia and chorek in Turkey. This bread is traditionally served at the breaking of the Lenten fast, and loaves of tsoureki may also be exchanged on Easter Sunday as gifts of friendship and goodwill among Greeks. Godparents in particular tend to give tsoureki to their god-children.

Wishing you a Happy Easter ! Christos Anesti & Kalo Pascha ! From the whole team at Aphrodite Hills Resort.

Easter Egg Painting Fun for the Kids !

Have fun designing Easter Eggs with the kids before the holidays !

With Easter just around the corner, sponge-painting is a fantastic way to decorate Easter eggs that are perfect for Easter time! Our Pirates Village Kids Club team bring you this great kids activity for the holidays.

What we need:

* Hard-boiled eggs
* Acrylic craft paints in the colours of your choice
* Household sponge
* Paper plate
* Paper towels
* Small bowl of water
* Egg holder or empty egg carton

1) Soak your sponge in water. Cut it into small pieces so that each piece can be used for a different colour of paint.

2) Place several colours of paint onto a paper plate.

3) Hold an egg in one hand with your fingers and with your other hand dab a sponge into the desired paint colour. Dab the sponge onto the paper towel - the idea of this is to remove the excess paint, but not completely dry it out.

4) Now dab the sponge directly onto your egg using any type of random pattern you like. Paint as much of the egg as you can and place it down to dry in the egg holder or carton. Repeat this process using different colours.

5) When one side has dried, complete the other side and allow that to dry as well.

Skin Care tips for the Summer

Smooth Summer Skin
Prepare your skin for the summer season !
Exfoliation is the most important thing during the post-winter months. Our body’s metabolism slows during winter, so our skin doesn’t exfoliate as quickly as normal. You need to exfoliate gently, without scratching the skin, this will help your make-up go on much better. We recommend the ESPA Refining Skin Polish for all skin types.
Also, our liver naturally detoxifies during spring, so you may break out in more spots/blackheads. Regular cleansing from the inside out, along with a proper diet and drinking plenty of water and introducing a liquid pro-biotic each day can really help tremendously. Eat the right kind of foods. A mixture of fruit and vegetables with lean meats.
To treat breakouts, try steaming your pores over a bowl of hot water with a few drops of ESPA Balancing Face Treatment Oil which contains Rose Damascena and Rose Geranium to unlock your pores and promote a clear skin prior to using a face mask
Try to use a face mask once a week. The ESPA Essential Cleansing Mask can be left overnight to purify and balance your skin.
Follow with the ESPA 24-Hour Balancing Moisturizer with White Thyme & Lavender which is non oily yet a very effective hydrator.
 Try not to smoke. Smoke is such a hazard for blocked skin.
Try to live a stress free life, take regular breaks from work and family commitments.

Try to incorporate exercise during the day – try walking to the next bus stop or getting off one step earlier, use the stairs not the escalator or lifts.

Easter Orthodox Church Services at Aphrodite Hills Resort

The picturesque St. Catherine’s Chapel at Aphrodite Hills Resort will be hosting the holy services over the Easter holidays

Friday 18th April 2014

Traditional Service - ‘Epitaphios’ - 7.00pm - 9.00pm
The Epitaphios depicts Christ after he has been removed from the cross, lying supine, as his body is being prepared for burial. The scene is taken from the Gospel of St. John. The bells of the church are tolled and in traditional Orthodox countries, flags are lowered to half-mast. Then the priest and faithful venerate the Epitaphios as the choir chants hymns. The procession takes place during the evening service, with the priests preceding and the young men carrying the litter of Christ.
Saturday 19th April 2014 - Holy Saturday
Orthros & Liturgy on Holy Saturday morning - 7.00am - 9.30am
The Liturgy of Easter Saturday morning is the sermon where mourning turns into joy once the Resurrection of Jesus is first announced. All icons are covered with black vestments during Holy Week and these are now taken off. All believers bang the stools in the church from joy whilst the priest strews laurel leaves.
Traditional Easter Church Service - 11.00pm - 2.30am
The Sermon of Resurrection is held at midnight, when everyone attends church with a candle. When the priest proclaims that “Christ has risen”, all the candles are lit and everyone greets everyone else with “Christos Anesti” meaning “Christ has risen”, to which the others answer “Alithos Anesti” meaning “Indeed He has risen.” Traditionally, the candle is carried home and burns through the night to symbolize the light returned to the world. Celebrations then continue with the cracking of the eggs and the Resurrection table.

Sunday 20th April 2014 - Easter Sunday
Esperinos tis Agapis10.30am - 11.30am
‘Esperinos tis Agapis’ is a short Liturgy which takes place every Easter Sunday morning when cheerful hymns are sung. The name ‘Esperinos tis Agapis’ means ‘Day of Love’ and comes from the tradition of hugging and kissing each other after the Liturgy.

Healthy Eating Tips for Men

Healthy Eating for Men

Eating Right

A healthy diet for men includes:
·        Eating at least 2 cups of fruit and 2½ cups of vegetables per day and at least once a week eat tomatoes or something made from tomatoes like pasta sauce. The antioxidant lycopene found in tomato products is good for maintaining prostate health.
·        Whole-grains! Eat at least half of all grains as whole-grains each day. Replace refined grains with whole-grain bread, cereal, pasta, brown rice or oats.
·        Fish! Eat at least two to three servings of fish per week.
·        Use unsaturated fats like oils, nuts and oil-based salad dressings in place of saturated fats like full-fat dairy foods, butter and high-fat sweets.

Energy Foods

Since men have more muscle and are typically bigger than women, they require more calories throughout the day. Moderately active males should eat between 2,000 to 2,800 calories per day. Your energy needs depend on your height, weight and activity levels.
For energy, weight management and disease prevention, men should eat whole-grains like whole-grain bread, pasta, cereal, brown rice, oats, barley, fruits and vegetables. These foods are high in fibre, help manage hunger and fullness and help fend off certain cancers, such as prostate and colon.

Beyond Meat

Men are typically meat-eaters because of the perception that more protein equals more muscle mass. This is not the case unless exercise is involved. Men tend to view red meat as more masculine than other proteins; often this leads them to order steak! It’s not the steak that’s unhealthy; it’s skipping the whole grains and vegetables. In addition, excessive meat eating is linked to heart disease and colorectal cancer in men.
Eat red meat less frequently. Instead, focus on more fruits, vegetables and low-fat dairy products. This will not only help you keep weight off, but it can help keep blood pressure down. Cut down on saturated fat from meat, cheese and fried foods. Instead, opt for foods with unsaturated, heart-healthy fats such as olive oil, canola oil, nuts, seeds and avocadoes.

Weight and Disease Risk

More than women, men gain weight around the middle; that’s due to the male hormone testosterone. If your waist measures more than 40 inches, it’s time to shed some pounds! This fat around the waist is typically buried deep in the abdomen and increases your risk of diabetes, heart disease and dementia.
