Easter Orthodox Church Services at Aphrodite Hills Resort

The picturesque St. Catherine’s Chapel at Aphrodite Hills Resort will be hosting the holy services over the Easter holidays

Friday 18th April 2014

Traditional Service - ‘Epitaphios’ - 7.00pm - 9.00pm
The Epitaphios depicts Christ after he has been removed from the cross, lying supine, as his body is being prepared for burial. The scene is taken from the Gospel of St. John. The bells of the church are tolled and in traditional Orthodox countries, flags are lowered to half-mast. Then the priest and faithful venerate the Epitaphios as the choir chants hymns. The procession takes place during the evening service, with the priests preceding and the young men carrying the litter of Christ.
Saturday 19th April 2014 - Holy Saturday
Orthros & Liturgy on Holy Saturday morning - 7.00am - 9.30am
The Liturgy of Easter Saturday morning is the sermon where mourning turns into joy once the Resurrection of Jesus is first announced. All icons are covered with black vestments during Holy Week and these are now taken off. All believers bang the stools in the church from joy whilst the priest strews laurel leaves.
Traditional Easter Church Service - 11.00pm - 2.30am
The Sermon of Resurrection is held at midnight, when everyone attends church with a candle. When the priest proclaims that “Christ has risen”, all the candles are lit and everyone greets everyone else with “Christos Anesti” meaning “Christ has risen”, to which the others answer “Alithos Anesti” meaning “Indeed He has risen.” Traditionally, the candle is carried home and burns through the night to symbolize the light returned to the world. Celebrations then continue with the cracking of the eggs and the Resurrection table.

Sunday 20th April 2014 - Easter Sunday
Esperinos tis Agapis10.30am - 11.30am
‘Esperinos tis Agapis’ is a short Liturgy which takes place every Easter Sunday morning when cheerful hymns are sung. The name ‘Esperinos tis Agapis’ means ‘Day of Love’ and comes from the tradition of hugging and kissing each other after the Liturgy.
