Construction at Alexander Heights – the final and most luxurious real estate installment at the multi-award winning Aphrodite Hills Resort, Cyprus – has officially started!

A group of representatives from Aphrodite Hills Resort have recently visited the Presidential Palace to hand over a check of around €8000 to the First Lady, Mrs. Elsie Christofia. The money was raised after the Resort’s annual Radiomarathon Charity Event.

Mrs. Despina Tymvios, Leisure and Events Manager of the Aphrodite Hills mentioned to Mrs. Christofia “It gives me a great pleasure to present you this check as the amount of money we have raised this year is actually double the amount what we raised last year and I’m very happy that even in tough times like the ones we live nowadays people do show their best selves when it comes to charity.”

Every year, in support of the Radiomarathon Charity, Aphrodite Hills Resort holds a Charity Fair aiming to raise as much money as possible to help the children with special needs.

This year’s fair was held on Sunday 23rd October at the Village square of Aphrodite Hills Resort and was supported by the Resort’s staff and management as well as by residents and guests. The fair was highly successful with around 2,000 visitors that came by to see the children of Ayios Stephanos sing, to watch Cypriot folk dancing and enjoy a great family day at the beautiful grounds of the award winning Resort!

The inaugural European Hotel Awards 2011 in association with Bloomberg Television have completed judging and the InterContinental Aphrodite Hills Resort Hotel has been informed that it is amongst the winning companies.
Successful entrants have been invited to attend a high profile Gala Presentation Dinner at the Savoy Hotel in London on 18th January 2012. Aphrodite Hills Golf Academy: Marfin Laiki Golf Open Results

On Saturday 17th of December Aphrodite Hills Golf hosted the 2011 Marfin Laiki Bank Golf Open.

The day began with breakfast at Aphrodite Hills Golf Clubhouse before all players headed to the Course to start at 9.00am with a shotgun start. A field of 90 Golfers participated and with near perfect weather conditions, we were set for some low scoring.

The players did not disappoint with at least 12 of the field returning scores better than their handicap. The eventual ‘Overall Winner’ was Bernd Gulas with a fantastic 40 stableford points. Kyriacos Michaelides, Director of Wealth Management for Marfin Laiki Bank presented the prizes to all the winners. “It is great to be here and involved with the golf, we hope that Marfin Laiki Bank is able to continue with some presence in golf in the future” said Mr. Michaelides during his welcome speech.

The Men’s Winner was Roberto Piona with 38 points and the Ladies Winner, Teresa Tortora-Piona also scored 38 points; the husband and wife winners showed their surprise and were elated with their win!

The Runners-up for the Men & Ladies were Steve Gargaro (38 points) and Ritta Resch (32 points) respectively. Our Junior Winner was Georgia Shears with a great score of 37 points, just beating 10 year old Nikolas Pitiris on countback who also scored 37 points. All the players had a fantastic day.

The InterContinental Aphrodite Hills Resort Hotel in Paphos on Cyprus has become the first resort and hotel on the Mediterranean Sea to qualify for the Seal of Quality awarded by the European Centre for Allergy Research Foundation (ECARF).

The five-star resort and hotel on the Greek side of the island has outfitted most of its 290 rooms, and all four of its restaurants to meet the needs of allergy sufferers. On the basis of these adjustments, it has been certified with the ECARF Seal of Quality for allergy-friendly products and services.

“Our guests expect the highest standards in comfort and service”, says Spyros Michaelides, Executive Assistant Manager and Director of Sales & Marketing at the InterContinental Aphrodite Hills Resort Hotel. “International travellers in particular expect us to respond to their individual needs. With our orientation toward the specific requirements of allergic guests, we improve the experience not only for visitors with allergies but also for their accompanying family members.”

Allergies can be a heavy burden, particularly when travelling, as hotels and restaurants are often not adequately informed about the needs of allergic travellers. We are proud to announce that on Saturday 29th October 2011, our first ever ‘World of Jazz Festival’ took place at Aphrodite Hills Resort. The festival featured the very best jazz bands and musicians on the island, playing a selection of music ranging from classical to funky. All of those who attended sat on the edge of their seats in excitement and in true amazement, as these very talented musicians treated us to a most impressive evening of music.

The ‘Charis Ioannou Quartet’ includes Pianist Marios Toumbas, Bassist Michael Messios, Drummer Ioannis Vafeas and Charis on Alto Sax. Charis and his colleagues have appeared in concerts in Poland, Greece, Kuwait, Serbia, Holland, England, Luxembourg, Belgium, U.S.A, Spain and Italy.

The ‘Irenaeos Koullouras Trio’, formed in early 2002 and immediately made a strong impact on the music scene not only in Cyprus, but also in Athens, Israel and Serbia.

The members of the band include George Krasides on Tenor Sax, Soprano & Clarinet, George Koulas on Drums and Irenaeos Koullouras on Contrabass.

The band ‘Uptown Beat’ formed in 2006 and features Charis Ioannou on Saxophone, Savvas Houvartas on Guitar, Gabriel Karapatakis on Bass and Rodos Panayiotou on Drums. The band’s repertoire is a fusion of various types of music including straight funk rhythms from the seventies, classic rock sounds, swinging rhythms from North America and Latin rhythms from Central and South America.

Last but not least, the singer Ioanna treated us to the velvet tones of her ‘alto’ voice, with her presence captivating the audience, by simply telling a story in song - in her own unique way - sometimes sweet and melodic and sometimes strong and direct.

This was a unique festival hosted by Aphrodite Hills. The evening was a complete success, with a huge attendance of people and an audience who were totally captivated by the performances of the talented musicians. The amazing light system, including a giant sky beam light added to the ambiance of the evening. A delectable menu offering a variety of foods, including pizzas, tapas, soup and Greek doughnuts, combined with wines and beer on sale at low prices, only added to the enjoyment of a perfect night out.

For next year, one has to wonder what could possibly improve the excellent standard and atmosphere of this year's Jazz Festival. With bated breath, we definitely look forward to finding out.

Traditionally, September is the time when the Summer comes to an end......Not here in Cyprus! Summer is extended through to the end of October and this is what make playing Tennis in Cyprus so special.

This month all the children will be returning to school, starting new classes and enjoying new beginnings while all the adults go back to work after their long deserved Holidays and back to the daily grind at work can seem daunting but never fear the Tennis Academy is here to help.

This month we focus on the Health Benefits that can be gained from playing Tennis. Going to the Gym is not the only way to get into shape...

Bjorn Borg, the stoic tennis-playing Swede who won five straight Wimbledon and six French Open singles titles, was famous for his calm, cool demeanor on the court. For a time, he was dubbed "Ice Borg." His conditioning was legendary, and so was his resting heart rate, a reported 45 beats per minute.

Whether true or not, the story about Borg's tranquil cardiac tissue underscores an important point about tennis: playing it on a regular basis is good for your heart. It's also good for the body and mind. In fact, playing tennis on a regular basis produces physical, physiologic and psychologic benefits.

These benefits include increased burning of calories, reduction in blood pressure and reduced stress. All of these benefits play a role in reducing a person’s risk of developing heart disease, the number-one killing disease among men and women.

According to the Miller Family Heart & Vascular Institute exercise physiologist and avid tennis player Gordon Blackburn, Ph.D., research shows that three hours of moderate aerobic exercise every week can cut the risk of developing heart disease by 50 percent. "Playing tennis at a moderate to vigorous intensity on a regular basis," says Dr. Blackburn, "is a good way to get your aerobic exercise. You'll exercise your muscles and burn calories. Tennis can even help lower your blood pressure. All of that helps reduce your risk of developing heart disease or of having a cardiovascular event, such as a heart attack or stroke."

A 135-pound woman playing an hour of tennis can burn 330 calories during doubles and 420 calories during singles, says Dr. Blackburn. An average-sized man playing an hour of tennis can burn about 425 calories during doubles and 600 calories during singles. In fact, says Dr. Blackburn, you’ll burn more calories playing three hours of tennis per week than you will doing three hours of light weightlifting, bowling or golfing.

“If you complement the tennis with other aerobic activities such as brisk walking or cycling, so that you are getting some sort of aerobic exercise most days of the week,” says Dr. Blackburn, “you can make an even bigger impact on improving heart health.” For instance, numerous recent studies, says Dr. Blackburn, have documented the physiologic benefits of walking on a regular basis and at a moderate intensity.

Stretching
Whether you’re a former tennis player ready to take up the sport again, or you’re taking it up for the first time, pre-play stretching is one of the most important precautions you can take to minimize the risk of muscle or limb injury. Stretching prepares the body for physical activity by warming the muscles and joints. The process takes only a few minutes. Stretching does not guarantee that you won’t be injured during play, but the evidence shows that it can help significantly reduce the risk.

For those of you thinking, “Dude, this body don’t bend,” stretching exercises are not designed to contort the limbs, inflict pain or serve as a tryout for Cirque de Soleil. The objective is to ready the muscles and joints for the stretching and extending you’ll do as play begins and progresses.

To keep tennis safe and healthy, always keep these tips in mind:

Get the body’s muscles and joints properly warmed up by stretching

Use water or healthy sports drinks to keep the body properly hydrated before, during and after play. This is particularly important when playing in hot, humid weather, or for longer than an hour per session.

If you injure yourself or experience chest pain, stop playing immediately and contact your physician.

Play within your means. (In other words, leave the acrobatics to Roddick and Venus Williams)

Get Your Game On…Safely

Dr. Blackburn encourages anyone who can to take up tennis, but certain individuals, he says, need to check with a physician before doing so. If you are interested in playing tennis, check the list below to see if any of the criteria describe or relate to your health status. If so, you’ll want to discuss your intentions with your doctor.

Chest discomfort or pain during physical activity

Current inactive lifestyle, by choice or because of a medical condition

Rheumatoid arthritis

Heart disease

Recent surgery (within past year)

Pacemaker

High or low blood pressure

Osteoporosis

Regular dizziness or loss of consciousness

Vision problems

Joint replacement

History of chronic joint pain or discomfort that worsens during physical activity

Also, if you are under a physician’s care for any reason, or taking medications to help manage a condition, be sure to discuss with your physician your interest in tennis before heading off to the courts.

Fun…and For All
One of the greatest aspects of tennis is that playing it can be fun. True, it can be challenging, especially if you’re just learning, but it also is a sport in which lessons, practice and persistence pay off quickly. Tennis offers a great diversion from life’s stresses as well as a great opportunity to socialize, particularly if you join a local tennis league or club or frequent public courts. Tennis is invigorating, and, once you get the hang of it, tremendously satisfying. It also makes a great family activity.

Contrary to what you might think, tennis is not a sport played and enjoyed only by the young. In fact, 11.3 million adults aged 25 and up played tennis at least once last year. And as Venus and Serena Williams have so brilliantly reminded everyone, tennis is a sport for women just as much as it is for men.
Some great information there. Now there is absolutely no excuse not to play, especiall if you are looking to get fitter or just looking to improve your game slightly. The tennis Academy is the place to be and we are looking forward to welcoming you very soon.

Get fit this Summer with Timis Tips!

We’re all looking for a killer beach bod, and what better way than to return from a week of sun and sea than with one? No, we’re not talking about eloping with your personal fitness trainer (although it may be tempting), but honing our own bodies into a healthy shape. Thankfully we’ve enlisted the services of Aphrodite Hills’ 28 year old personal training star, Timmis Kampanellis, to give us some top tips for getting svelte this summer.

What is the best way to a beach body?

You must always mix good nutrition with exercise. You must do it if you want to see good results. For people who are coming late to getting into shape, the first thing they must do is start exercising immediately with functional training, which is exercising with your own body weight.

Try this exercise which will only take 15-20 minutes you will work hard and burn a lot of fat in a short amount of time. Move from each set of exercises without stopping.

Do 20 Sumo squats – open your legs wide and do a squat, like a ballerina doing a plié, keeping toes to the outside of the knees.

Next, 20 lunges nonstop – these and the squats are both very good for your thighs and gluteal muscles, plus burn a large amount of calories.

Then 10 squat jumps, a squat followed by a jump.

Then 20 pushups or women’s pushups (with knees on the floor) which is great for the arms, upper body, and bingo wings.

Finish with 20 crunches.

Repeat this routine three times and you’ll have a full cardio workout which tones muscles at the same time.

How does the New TRX system help a workout?

The TRX system is a great way to start getting into shape. It’s easy and functional to use anywhere and everywhere, you just need something to hang it from. The TRX is really effective because you twist two kinds of muscle fibres, short muscle fibres and long muscle fibres. While your body tries to recover over the rest of the day you’ll be burning lots of calories. If you eat healthily, and you must, and reduce the carbs for a few days, you’ll see very quick weight loss results.

Who do you think the TRX training system is most suitable for?

All ages, because you’re working with your own body weight. It’s great for building a nice firm body with nice lines, the natural, althletic body you were meant to have. It’s a highly personalised system because it’s all about you working with what your weight is exactly. I teach clients two ways of exercise, one how to use the TRX, and if they don’t want to buy them I tell them how to work out with exercises in their house using their body weight. Each client can take their own programme back home with them.

And how do you think it’s different from pilates and powerplate?

It’s a lower impact programme, and you will see results but it’s gentler and not so quick, it takes longer as you’re not pressing yourself to you limits in quite the same way.

What food would you recommend for training?

After training a fresh juice mixed with different fruits, and as the heat in summer is greater than winter we need to protect ourselves with vitamins.. mix orange carrots and apple.

What foods would you avoid?

Bad carbs and fat. Take less food in the summer and drink more water and you’ll lose weight. To maintain weight keep giving something to yourself every 3 hours and you’ll be able to balance your insulin and blood sugar levels. Eating something healthy in this time stops you giving in to cravings.

What do you find most satisfying about your job?

Making people happy and helping them change their lifestyle and achieve their goals, if somebody wants to lose a certain amount of weight and they succeed in that, I am more happy than them.

What’s your number one health tip?

My number one health tip is to stay positive and be positive. If you are not positive then you are not going to eat in a healthy way, and you are not going to train, and everything collapses. My tip is to have positive energy and then you will succeed in everything. If you are a negative person, you can have all the knowledge in the world but you are not going to find success.

July has been a very interesting month at the Retreat Spa; we’ve been learning new things and taking on new experiences. We have welcomed new team members and seen others take on new roles… changes are happening and all of them are positive!

The Spa has been working in cooperation with Pevonia; a premier in the Spa industry for many years. The name, ’Pevonia’ stems from Greek mythology. Legend has it that the gods’ physician, ‘Paion’ discovered peonia - an exquisite flower filled with a magical essence. Once extracted, its purity and power could miraculously cure a number of ills. And so the legend grew… a perfect fit for a Spa situated so close to Aphrodite’s Rock!

We have been very lucky to have one of Pevonia’s Senior Trainers with us this month. She has been introducing the Therapists to some new products, techniques and treatments which we are very excited to try out. We have also been revising our skills and refreshing our minds, to ensure we stay at the peak of our performance.

Working together with our Spa Manager, Anastasia they have been planning new strategies, which will give all Spa guests a more complete experience with us; one which will not only relax you, but give you excellent results as well.

The Retreat Spa, together with the rest of the Resort was used by the competitors for the ‘Miss Cyprus’ title this month, during which they shot mini films of each of the contestants with the Resort as the background. The contestants told us they found our Spa fully deserved its reputation as a place for tranquillity and relaxation; particularly after all the hard work they had been doing to prepare for the beauty contest.

Welcome to the August edition of the Tennis Academy Newsletter. This month focuses on the summer holidays, which are finally here! All attention now switches from work to play and where better to start than at Aphrodite Hills Tennis Academy. In this issue, we shall take you through what July has already brought us… and what is to come in the following months.

July saw the beginning of our Holiday Tennis Programmes, which bring kids and adults alike from across the whole of Europe to enjoy our fantastic courses - suitable for everyone - and which are so much fun!

Nowadays, Group Coaching is highly regarded as the best way to learn and we believe this is exactly right! Group Coaching enables both kids and adults to learn together and in doing so, it becomes much more fun than learning alone. Learning also becomes easier in a more relaxed environment, which is why we here at Aphrodite Hills Tennis Academy promote it in such a way. Just take a look at all of the options available this summer! Holiday Tennis Offers

Tennis is always popular with children when they are on holiday and Aphrodite Hills’ Tennis Coaches are renowned for their ability to teach children. With the Mental Match Play Themed Summer Tennis School for Kids (ages 5-10), this is a perfect environment for children to come and learn how to play - not to mention a great way to make new friends! Come and learn with Scooby Doo, Donald Duck and finishing off with the World Famous Olympic Games on the Friday.

Throughout the week at Aphrodite Hills Tennis Academy there are always a whole lot of activities going on. Check out the days and times of the activities below. Again, there is something for everyone!

Mental Match Play Summer Offers

Our highly regarded Friday Tournament schedule has recently started and a total of 18 entrants for the first one battled it out to be the King or Queen of the Tie Break. The first Tournament saw the Juniors and Seniors split into two different groups. Eventually, we had two winners after they battled it out bravely in the finals.

The Tennis Academy is pleased to announce that the popular Tuesday Night Adult Coaching Class for Locals will still be running throughout the summer holidays, every Tuesday between 7.00pm and 9.00pm - as will the Children’s Group, every Sunday at 9.00am until 10.00am.

Club Nights from 7.00pm to 9.00pm will also remain in place throughout the holiday period.

Timis our Personal Trainer has been awarded with a Certificate of Excellence from one of the world’s leading Spa Holiday experts, Wellbeing Escapes. Timis’ efforts to go that extra mile for his clients have been recognized… and for that we thank him and congratulate him.

Standards at the Fitness Centre are also being improved and include the introduction of antiseptic gels and sprays for more hygienic equipment and a Recovery Room, where you can recuperate after your workout and enjoy a refreshing drink on the lounge chairs.

New classes, such as ‘Zumba’ on Saturdays are also doing very well; there is however, room for more - so be sure to sign up and get into the Latin spirit. If shaking your hips is not your thing, then every Friday we also have our weekly Yoga Class, helping to balance both your mind and body.

Some extra innovations…

With the summer heat increasing day by day, we’ve introduced a few cooling touches to refresh you as you relax by our scenic infinity pool. Our attendants will be offering a ‘spray of cool mist’ or a frozen fruit stick to keep the soaring temperatures at bay. If your sunglasses need a polish, one of our attendants will be happy to clean them for you.

Μεγάλη επιτυχία σημείωσε το Παγκύπριο Τουρνουά Αντισφαίρισης της AUDI και του Aphrodite Hills που διεξάγει από τις 30 Απριλίου μέχρι τις 14 Μαΐου στην Ακαδημία Αντισφαίρισης του Aphrodite Hills.

Το τουρνουά το οποίο συμπεριλάμβανε αγώνες μόνο για παιδία ηλικίας απο 10 μέχρι 18 χρονών, είχε 266 συμμετοχές και οι τελικοί αγώνες διεξήχθηκαν το Σαββάτο 14 Μαΐου. Ακολούθησε απονομή και δεξίωση στην Ακαδημία Αντισφαίρισης του Aphrodite Hills στην οποία βραβεύτηκαν οι δύο πρώτοι αθλητές από κάθε κατηγορία. Στην δεξίωση παρευρέθηκαν μεταξύ άλλων ο κος. Δημήτρης Βλάχος – Division Manager της AUDI και ο κος. Wyn Lewis – o Προπονητής της Ακαδημίας Αντισφαίρισης του Aphrodite Hills.

Επίσημος Χορηγός της όλης διοργάνωσης ήτανε η AUDI ενώ διαιτητης του τουρνουά ήτανε ο κος. Γιώργος Βασιλιαδης.

For three days, beginning on the 13th May, Aphrodite Hills’ PGA Golf Pro’s, Giles Johnson and Danny Heard are hosting the ‘Festival of Golf’ aimed at giving beginners and existing golfers the opportunity to take advantage of the services they offer, with a variety of classes to choose from.

The Aphrodite Hills Resort in an effort to show its love and support for all stray animals has teamed up with the Paphiakos & CCP Animal Welfare in order to rescue all the abandoned cats and dogs found around the Resort area.

The Resort’s Security team has always passed on these animals to the shelter to protect them and find them a new home. On top of that a few days ago, Aphrodite Hills Resort donated the generous amount of €1000 to Paphiakos & CCP Animal Welfare Organisation to show its support and appreciation!
